SPEEDWAY GP MAKES GERMAN RETURN ON TETEROW’S BIG WEEKENDSPEEDWAY GP MAKES GERMAN RETURN ON TETEROW’S BIG WEEKEND

Germany’s biggest speedway event roars back on track after a near-three-year absence as the FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Teterow returns to Bergring Arena this Saturday.

Nestled in the forests of north-east Germany, Teterow attracts fans from all over Europe with its prime location just a few hours from neighbouring speedway nations Poland and Denmark.

Speedway GP last visited the Bergring Arena on August 31, 2019, when Polish racer Maciej Janowski topped the podium.

The 2020 FIM German Speedway GP was due to be part of the venue’s 90th anniversary celebrations. But these have been delayed for two years due to the pandemic.

Teterow’s glorious track racing history will be celebrated this weekend with two epic events. The venue also stages its 100th Teterower Bergringrennen race on the fearsome grasstrack circuit nearby on Sunday afternoon from 12:00 CET.

But all eyes will be on the Bergring Arena on Saturday for the fourth round of the 2022 Speedway GP World Championship.

CLOSING THE GAP

With series leader Bartosz Zmarzlik of Poland exiting the Prague FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic at the semi-final stage last Saturday, his fellow countryman Janowski took the chance to close the gap. Despite hitting the tapes in the final, his fourth-place finish leaves him just one point short of the double world champion at the top of the standings.

Zmarzlik now leads the way on 44, with Janowski on 43, but the Wroclaw-born star will be hoping to build on his Teterow triumph in 2019 and make it back-to-back German wins.

Zmarzlik is also no stranger to the Bergring Arena podium, having reached it three times in four visits, finishing second in 2016 and 2019 and third in 2018.

Danish racer Leon Madsen is currently third in the Speedway GP standings on 40 points, with compatriot Mikkel Michelsen fourth on 33 after exiting the Prague round with three points.

Triple world champion Tai Woffinden is just behind him on 32 in fifth after storming to second spot in Prague last Saturday as he picks up the pace in the Speedway GP title race.

Aussie star Jason Doyle is sixth on 31 after finishing third in Prague, while Orlen FIM Speedway of Poland – Warsaw winner Max Fricke is seventh on 30 – level on points with Swedish star Fredrik Lindgren in eighth. Last Saturday’s winner Martin Vaculik of Slovak is ninth on 29 after breathing new life into his season with an epic win at Marketa Stadium.

German wild card Kai Huckenbeck flies the home flag in what will be his fourth Speedway GP. He will be bidding to build on his FIM Speedway of Nations heroics from 2021, when he scored 22 points from a possible 24 and won the Final Qualifier heat at the Semi-Finals in Daugavpils, Latvia.
