LINDGREN RETURNS FOR BEN FUND BONANZA AT WORKINGTONLINDGREN RETURNS FOR BEN FUND BONANZA AT WORKINGTON

Speedway GP world No.2 Fredrik Lindgren is back in Britain for his second straight Ben Fund Bonanza meeting at Workington on March 16.

The event is organised by the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund – a UK-based charity which helps riders temporarily or permanently sidelined by racing injuries, including support with treatment costs and living expenses while they are unable to earn.

Lindgren, who is joined at Workington by Speedway GP rival and local hero Dan Bewley, has not raced full-time in the UK for seven years, but he spent 14 seasons with Wolverhampton from 2003 until 2017.

That final season ended with a broken neck, which required a hospital stay in Britain followed by an intense winter of rehabilitation, before Lindgren fought back to claim his first Speedway GP top-three finish in 2018.

After receiving some help from the Ben Fund in 2017, Lindgren is delighted to compete in the Bonanza for the second straight season.

He said: “I am happy to be doing the meeting again. I remember some good racing last year and I wasn’t gating too well, so I had to do a bit of overtaking.

“The Ben Fund is a very good cause, of course. It has helped a lot of riders and I hope it will be around to continue to help for a long time.

“The Ben Fund helped me in 2017 when I broke my neck, and I was in a pretty bad state then. They were very generous with me.”

Lindgren became a legend at Wolverhampton, helping them to league titles in 2009 and 2016. Like many in the sport, he was sad to see their Monmore Green home lost to speedway at the end of 2023 after landlords Entain elected not to extend the club’s lease.

He added: “Of course I am very sorry about what has happened at Wolverhampton. Terrible news for everyone there. I hope they can get something new started there. It’s the only club I have raced for in Britain and so it is close to my heart.”
