BEWLEY EYES SPEEDWAY GP SPOT

Great Britain ace Dan Bewley admits he would love to take the step up into the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series “over the next year or two.”

The FIM Speedway of Nations world champion has been named as Speedway GP second reserve for this season and could get called into rounds if riders are missing due to injury, illness or other reasons.

Britain already has two representatives in the series, with triple world champion Tai Woffinden and 2020 European champion Robert Lambert flying the flag this season.

Bewley would love to join them soon. Speaking to Polish champions Wroclaw’s YouTube channel, he said: “I think everybody wants to get to the GPs and hopefully over the next year or two we can make it happen. That’s the plan.”

The Cumbrian will also compete for Swedish side Smederna this season, which means he will not race for SGB Premiership team Belle Vue.

Bewley admitted: “I will miss racing at Belle Vue. It has been five or six years I have spent there since the start of my career.

“Hopefully I can go back there in the future and hopefully I will still get the chance to go back and do the British Final and still race there this year.”

Bewley is making rapid advances in the sport and benefitted from working with Wroclaw’s four-time world champion coach Greg Hancock last year.

The Californian was impressed with the Brit’s progress and Bewley is delighted to have one of Speedway GP’s all-time greats back in the pits and helping the next generation following his retirement in February 2020.

He said: “Looking at Greg is pretty cool. It’s good to see the reputation he has. It’s a couple of years since he has retired and people still look at him in high regard and with a lot of respect. If I could finish my career like that, I would be quite happy.”

Bewley joins forces with the likes of Speedway GP trio Woffinden, Maciej Janowski and world champion Artem Laguta at Wroclaw again this year.

The club won its first PGE Ekstraliga title since 2006 last term, and the Olympic Stadium outfit is bidding to retain that crown.

Bewley said: “It was awesome to win the league last year. As good as it was, hopefully we can keep it up and do it again this year. That would be extra special.”
