Former Speedway GP world champion Jason Doyle has made a sensational return to the Australian national team ahead of the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup in Wroclaw from July 25-29.

Doyle announced he was stepping down from the side last December – just months after helping his country to FIM Speedway of Nations gold in Vojens on July 30.

Despite racing in the Semi-Final in Denmark, Doyle did not take to the track in the Final as Max Fricke and Jack Holder ended Australia’s 20-year wait for a world team title.

But there’s no doubt Doyle has been an Aussie powerhouse since making his national team debut during the 2013 Monster Energy FIM SWC, and his return could prove game-changing for the Roos as they seek to complete a sensational SWC and SON double.

Doyle makes his Aussie team comeback in a test match against Poland in Rybnik on May 3, racing alongside Speedway GP rivals Holder and Max Fricke, plus 2012 world champion Chris Holder, Brady Kurtz and Rohan Tungate.

After mulling over his international retirement, the Krosno, Indianerna and Ipswich star admits he couldn’t miss the Monster Energy FIM SWC’s relaunch as it returns to the calendar for the first time since 2017, with the event now being staged every three years and the FIM SON taking place in 2024 and 2025.

Doyle said: “After racing in the Aussie Championship back home this winter and recharging the batteries, I’ve had time to reflect on my international commitments.

“A return to the traditional team format in the World Cup now comes around only every three years and I felt that’s just too big an opportunity to miss.”

Team manager Mark Lemon admits Doyle’s U-turn comes as a huge boost with the Monster Energy FIM SWC contested over a five-rider format, meaning every top Aussie will be needed on track.

He said: “Jason has been a stalwart of Team Australia and his decision to be available for international duties and World Cup selection is a huge boost to the team, especially going into this year’s five-man format.

“I’m pleased that with some time to reflect and after many discussions about what’s best for Jason and the team, we’re seeing him back in an Australian race suit this year.”
