2024 SGP standings

Danish racer Leon Madsen is targeting a record-equalling third Speedway European Championship crown as he bids for an instant Speedway GP return for 2026.Madsen serves as this season’s SGP first reserve and was gutted to have missed out on a full place in the line-up after finishing ninth in 2024 and being overlooked for a permanent wild card by the SGP Commission.The 2018 and 2022 European champion is determined to take matters into his own hands in 2025 as he targets SEC gold, which would guarantee his place in next season’s Speedway GP series.Last year’s SEC runner-up Madsen will compete in the four-round continental series, which visits Polish club Bydgoszcz on July 12, German venue Gustrow on July 26, Polish city Leszno on August 23 and Czech track Pardubice on the opening night of their Golden Helmet weekend on September 19.And Madsen believes winning an SEC series, which also features SGP stars Andzejs Lebedevs and Anders Thomsen, is his best way of securing an immediate Speedway GP comeback.He said: “All my focus is to do the very best I can do in all the meetings I race, and obviously in the European Championship. I think the competition in the European Championship is quite hard now. It’s up there with the GP because it is also a qualifier to the GP.“There is a smaller room for error with only four rounds. But I have won it twice before and had silver too, so I know what I have to do, and I am up for it because I want to get back into the GP.&nbsp;“I want to get back in as fast as possible. I don’t want to sit out for a few years. My age is also catching up on me. I am 36 now – 37 at the end of the year.“It was not fun to get the message that I wouldn’t be part of it this year, but I have kind of accepted it now. I don’t know how to say it, but I have kind of embraced the time off and I’ll take all the advantage of it that I can, so that I can get back into the GP next year stronger.“I will try and win the European Championship and if not, I’ll do the very best I can in all of the meetings I do, so hopefully when we come to the end of the season, the GP people will look my way for next year with the wild cards if I need one.”Madsen has another outside chance of punching his SGP ticket. He will be called into action in Speedway GP this season if any of the 15 permanent riders are forced out of a round due to injury, illness or other reasons.If he races the vast majority of the 10 rounds, it’s not impossible that he could finish in the World Championship’s top seven, which would guarantee him a place in the 2026 series.Asked about his chances during the recent SGP media day in Warsaw, Madsen declared: “If you give me seven or eight GPs, I will be in there for sure when the season finishes. But I am not thinking about racing in the GP this year because then somebody would have to get injured, and you don’t hope for that.”

MADSEN SEEKS SEC CROWN TO PUNCH 2026 SPEEDWAY GP TICKET

SGP2 champions Mateusz Cierniak and Wiktor Przyjemski are among the stars who will fight for their place in the Polish Championship series in 2025.The young guns have both booked their spot in the Polish Championship Challenge, which takes place in Pila on May 10. The top eight riders secure places in the Polish Championship series, which visits Torun (June 19), Ostrow (July 19) and Czestochowa (August 15).Cierniak and Przyjemski are joined in the Pila qualifier by former Speedway GP riders Przemyslaw and Piotr Pawlicki, Pawel Przedpelski and Szymon Wozniak, as well as 2021 FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion Jakub Miskowiak.Former Speedway European Championship bronze medallist Kacper Woryna, the in-form Grzegorz Zengota, Krzysztof Buczkowski, Gleb Chugunov, Oskar Fajfer, Jakub Jamrog, Marcin Nowak, Adrian Cyfer and former SGP3 star Kacper Mania complete the Polish Championship Challenge field.Speedway GP stars Bartosz Zmarzlik and Dominik Kubera have already booked places in the series, along with reigning champion Maciej Janowski and Speedway GP second substitute Patryk Dudek, who was third last year. They are joined in gaining automatic qualification by 2024 SGP2 rider Jakub Krawczyk – the reigning Polish Under-21 champion.Polish team manager Rafal Dobrucki will nominate two series wild cards for the competition, and the line-up for each round will be completed by one further one-day wild card.

SAFETY JOGGER PARTNERS WITH FIM SPEEDWAY FOR 2025

Fans are being encouraged to join forces to support German racer Max Dilger as motorcycle website SpeedWeek.com takes part in the Wings for Life World Run on May 4.Dilger’s 2024 season came to a cruel end when he was involved in a crash during a French league match in October. In addition to several broken bones, Dilger sustained a serious injury to his thoracic spine, which led to severe damage to his spinal cord.Since his discharge from hospital, the 35-year-old has been undergoing physiotherapy at the Center for Rehabilitation in Pforzheim, most recently spending eight weeks there.&nbsp;Dilger has six hours of individual therapy per day, at a cost of just under €4,500 per week. Five-time Speedway GP world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik raced to his fourth Golden Helmet in Opole on Monday as Dominik Kubera secured his spot in the SGP qualification rounds.Zmarzlik topped the podium, winning a run-off with double SGP2 champion Mateusz Cierniak after the pair tied on 11 points. Despite missing out on the Golden Helmet, runner-up Cierniak left Opole with plenty to celebrate after earning places in the 2026 Speedway GP and 2025 Speedway European Championship qualification rounds, which take place in the coming months.Kubera collected third place after triumphing over Kacper Woryna in a run-off. The duo tied on 10 points. This was enough to put Kubera into the Speedway GP qualification rounds, and Woryna claimed the final spot on offer.With Zmarzlik and Kubera ineligible for the SEC qualifiers as full-time SGP riders and fourth-placed Woryna and fifth-placed Piotr Pawlicki, who scored nine, already qualified for the continental series, the remaining SEC qualification-round spots went to Bartlomiej Kowalski, Grzegorz Zengota, Robert Chmiel and former world No.2 Patryk Dudek, who all scored eight points. ZMARZLIK WINS FOURTH GOLDEN HELMET AS POLAND'S SGP 2026 QUALIFICATION CONTENDERS ARE CONFIRMED

Aussie ace Brady Kurtz stormed to a 14 paid 15-point maximum on his home PGE Ekstraliga debut for Wroclaw as they raced to an emphatic 60-30 victory over Zielona Gora on Sunday.Kurtz went unbeaten by an opponent over five rides as he picks up pace ahead of his full-time FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut at the WWK FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut on May 3.He was brilliantly supported by 12 paid 13-point tallies from both 2021 Speedway GP world champion Artem Laguta and former SGP2 star Bartlomiej Kowalski, with Dan Bewley bagging nine paid 11 and Maciej Janowski scoring seven points.Speedway GP first substitute Leon Madsen led the Falubaz scoring on nine paid 10 points, with Jaroslaw Hampel and Przemyslaw Pawlicki adding eight.In the day’s other match, triple European champion Mikkel Michelsen starred on 12 paid 13 points for Torun, sealing his side a 45-45 draw away to Gorzow.Michelsen split Speedway GP rivals Anders Thomsen and Andzejs Lebedevs to limit the home side to a 4-2 in heat 15, earning Torun a precious point on the road. Polish duo Bartosz Zmarzlik and Dominik Kubera defied a big performance from Jason Doyle to lead Lublin to a 49-41 victory over Czestochowa in the PGE Ekstraliga on Easter Saturday.Zmarzlik racked up 13 paid 14 points from five races, with Kubera collecting 12 paid 13. Despite Lions hero Doyle bagging 14 paid 15 points from six races, the PGE Ekstraliga champions had too much for Czestochowa. EKSTRALIGA | SGP POLES DEFY DOYLE HEROICS TO INSPIRE LUBLIN VICTORY

Birmingham has confirmed Slovenian star Matej Zagar will sit out their double-header with Belle Vue on Easter Monday due to visa issues.Zagar is racing in Britain for the first time since 2022, but his comeback season has been paused while the situation is resolved.With the club only permitted to recruit a guest with an average of up to 75 percent of Zagar’s figure, Lewis Kerr set to cover for him at the National Speedway Stadium on Monday lunchtime, with Dan Thompson replacing him at Perry Barr for the evening match.In a statement released on Saturday, the Rowe Motor Oil Premiership side’s CEO Nigel Tolley said: “Matej has been riding on a temporary visa whilst his permanent one is approved – this is standard practise. It is valid for one month and has now expired.“Matej’s application for a visa has been in progress since February but, inexplicably, has not yet been issued. Process times are quoted as being three weeks and no reason has been forthcoming for the delay. We have been chasing daily. All other Birmingham riders have all been processed in plenty of time. We very much look forward to Matej rejoining the team when his elusive visa is issued.”Elsewhere in the Premiership, former Great Britain Under-21 star Dan Gilkes has replaced Sam Hagon as Leicester’s rising star.

ZAGAR SITS OUT BRUMMIES' EASTER MONDAY DOUBLE-HEADER

Great Britain racer Tai Woffinden declared “next stop: rehabilitation” after leaving hospital in Rzeszow, Poland on Friday.Woffinden was discharged to continue his recovery following his crash in a sparring match at Krosno on March 30, which saw the Rzeszow rider airlifted to hospital following a first-bend crash.Despite enduring multiple fractures, blood transfusions and time in an induced coma, Woffinden appeared extremely upbeat as he left hospital on crutches.Speaking in a video uploaded to his official Facebook page, which can be viewed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/1211633387306877">HERE</a>, he said: “We’re out of here! Last day in hospital. Next stop: rehabilitation. Let’s go!”In the text accompanying the post, he wrote: “Can’t thank the staff enough at Kliniczny Szpital Wojewodzki nr2 im swietej Jadwigi Krolowej w Rzeszowie hospital enough for all the work they have done on me over the past weeks. I’m checking out right now and the rehab begins on Sunday. Excuse the robot voice. Don’t know when it’s gonna get better.”Everyone at FIM Speedway is delighted to see Woffinden’s progress and we wish him continued success with his recovery.
