WARSAW DOUBLE FOR MADSEN?WARSAW DOUBLE FOR MADSEN?

Danish racer Leon Madsen is seeking a repeat of his 2019 Warsaw heroics as he bids for a PGE Narodowy double in the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw tonight.

Madsen raced to victory on his full-time Speedway GP debut in the Polish capital in May 2019 to start his career on the sport’s biggest stage in sensational style.

It was a result that set Madsen on course for an unforgettable season as he followed up his Warsaw wins with victories in Cardiff and Torun to finish just two points behind world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik, as he claimed Speedway GP World Championship silver.

The Dane finished second behind Bartosz Zmarzlik in Qualifying Practice on Friday as he showed his pace around PGE Narodowy again.

And Madsen would love to deliver a repeat of his famous win three years ago. He said: “It was a long time ago now, but it feels like yesterday. It was a great night and great opening night for my GP campaign. I will try and do something similar tonight.

“It’s nice to be back in these big stadiums again and racing in front of thousands of people. It’s great to be back.

“Obviously I want to get the 20 points. I will give it as much as possible and to win it would be awesome.”

Madsen raced to a solid 12 points at the series-opening FIM Speedway GP of Croatia – Donji Kraljevec on April 30. Despite falling short of the final, the Danish international admits it was a good result in the circumstances as he battled illness in the lead-up to the event.

He said: “Normally I would not say it was a strong performance with 12 points. Obviously I would have liked more.

“But leading up to that event, I was sick with the flu. I was sitting at that hotel with a fever the night before. It was tough, so taking that into consideration, I was very happy with those 12 points.

“I am still able to fight for the championship and that’s what I want. I am here to fight for the championship.”
