LAMBERT EYES FIM SON DOUBLE FOR GB

Great Britain racer Robert Lambert insists the Lions have their eyes on the prize as they head to Danish seaside city Esbjerg seeking back-to-back FIM Speedway of Nations world titles.

Lambert teamed up with Tai Woffinden, Dan Bewley and Tom Brennan as the Brits won their first world team title in 32 years at the FIM SON Final in Manchester last October.

And with all three riders enjoying a strong start to the Speedway GP season, the Lions will be among the favourites to roar to victory at Esbjerg’s Granly Speedway Arena – Woffinden’s home track in Denmark.

Great Britain launch their FIM SON campaign in Semi-Final 2 on Thursday, July 28 against Sweden, France, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy and tournament debutants Slovakia. The top three nations join hosts Denmark and the top three countries from Semi-Final 1 on July 27 in the SON Final on Saturday, July 30.

While FIM SON five-rider squads are set to be confirmed soon, it is expected that Lambert, Woffinden and Bewley will be among those selected by GB bosses Simon Stead and Oliver Allen.

After making history in Manchester, Lambert would love to help his country retain a world team title for the first time since England won three straight FIM World Pairs Championships between 1976 and 1978.

He said: “Me, Dan and Tai have been going very well this season. Obviously we will be going there to retain our title and nothing less. We will keep focused on it and not let it slip.

“We are definitely looking forward to being out there and getting together with the guys from Team GB, and showing our success can move forward – we do not want to be one-time winners.”
